Thesis Checklist

Research

The bulk of my current research before the actual production is learning the specified written languages I will be producing. So, I have a goal of undertaking research on Cyrillic and Hebrew language systems as a whole to understand their finer points and structures. Background research that I am considering to be fairly important is research on languages as a whole, how they form and evolve over time and how that impacts the sounds and glyphs. I consider all of these important components to my thesis, because it is all about the basic learning of the main goal I want to accomplish with the thesis.

Items for This Term

I won't have any made items within the period of this semester, but I plan to produce work for the thesis over winter break. These items include the system for which the font will be based around, as well as the English glyph structures in their completed forms. The bulk of production will take place during the break and during the spring semester after all initial research has been done. On smaller-scale production, I will be producing sketches and rough versions of font systems to start and get a feel for what I want the final product to look like.

Learning Needed for Spring Term

The knowledge I need to know by the spring term is the functions and layouts of Hebrew and Cyrillic glyphs, this is the most important thing needed to be known. On the software end, I need to learn and understand the program Glyphs, which is a font development tool I will be using to create the system.

Resources

The major resource I need is the program Glyphs, which I currently already own. Other than that not much is needed in terms of resources, other than the basic needs for quick sketching of ideas.

Another aspect of resources I will need is the actual sources of information. For this, I need a lot of information, from websites, imagery, and books. I need books about learning languages and books on the specific languages I will be covering. I also need imagery of these language alphabets to know how the written language is displayed and used. I also need video and website tutorials for Glyphs, since I don't know the finer details of the program.

Finished Thesis Items

Right now the goal of the thesis is to have approximately 150 glyphs in the font. This will include 95 English glyphs, 33 Cyrillic glyphs, and 22 Hebrew glyphs. The Cyrillic and Hebrew glyphs are specifically their alphabets currently, while the English glyphs include uppercase, lowercase, numbers, and special characters.

The thesis will have a final usable production. The goal is to make this a usable font with the glyphs software that can be download and used in other designs.
